Lady Jacks beat the Honkers in first-round of playoffs
Nov. 15, 2012 — The Westwood High School volleyball team hosted the Tulelake Honkers in the first round of playoffs Tuesday, Nov. 6. The Lady Jacks ended up routing the Honkers in three straight sets and advancing to the second round.
The Lady Jacks came in as the fourth-seed in the playoffs and were ready to take on the fifth-seeded Honkers.
It didn’t take the Lady Jacks long as they were clicking on all cylinders from the start, winning the first set, 25-20.
The Lady Jacks started off the first set hot, but the Honkers didn’t want to give up as they slowly clawed at the score, giving them the lead with only a handful of points to go to get the win.
The Lady Jacks fought back after a couple of nice kills from Erin House to regain the lead. A couple of point-saving digs by Manae Hackett kept the Honkers at 20 points and gave the Lady Jacks the win. Adriana Vega ended the first set with an ace.
The Lady Jacks got into a rhythm in the second set as they took the lead early and never looked back, winning, 25-11.
Chanae Hackett got the second set started with a booming kill. While Diana Vega went on a tear, getting eight serves in a row to go along with one ace. Adriana finished the second set with three more kills and Chanae finished with four kills. House ended the second set with a beautiful serve that fooled the Honkers, ending the match with another ace.
The third set was more of the same as the Lady Jacks walked away with another easy victory, 25-14.
House got things started off early as she got four straight points off of her perfectly placed serves, giving the Lady Jacks an early 4-0 lead. Adriana had an amazing third set, as she finished with four more kills, served eight straight times, getting three aces for the Lady Jacks. Chanae gave the Lady Jacks three more aces and two kills.
“We had kind of a slow start,” said head coach Nancy Barrera. “but we got back on track and took care of business. I’m proud of everything these girls have accomplished this year.”
Adriana finished the game with nine kills, five aces, went 14 of 14 on her attacks and went 18 of 19 on her serves.
Her sister, Diana, served the ball extremely well, as she went 13 of 15 on her serves and recorded three aces.
House finished with seven kills, three aces and went 11 of 12 on her attacks.
Chanae finished with six kills, two aces and was perfect on her serves, going 16 for 16.
The Lady Jacks advance to the second round of the playoffs. The location, time and opponent are to be determined.
