At a meeting of the Northern California Commercial Organization, members discussed a proposed law giving the Board of Supervisors power to tax its constituents. Due to an increase in national emergencies, local government chipped in and paid the bill for the disasters. To offset this exportation of money, the county wanted to tax its citizens so they could pay their share.

65 years ago

The possibility of converting large fields of Guayule rubber plants highlighted the discussion at a chamber of commerce meeting. Lassen National Forest officials announced experiments to discover if the rubber-bearing plants could thrive in this area. If so, officials said acres were planned for the Madeline Plains and Secret Valley sections of the county.

40 years ago

Army PFC Jerry Jones, of Susanville, was killed in action while serving with the Fourth Infantry Division in South Vietnam. The 19-year-old soldier graduated from Susanville Elementary School and attended Lassen High School before entering the Army in March. He was the son of William and Cleda Jones.

30 years ago

The Susanville Police Department was struggling to combat the threat of losing nearly two-thirds of its officers. Four to six of the nine-man force had indicated they were looking for work elsewhere because a wage agreement with the city council had not been reached. The problem came to a head after wage levels had steadily fallen behind comparable law enforcement positions in the county and the state, said Sergeant Jack Burk.

Eleven members of the anti-nuclear group, known as the Plumas People for Peace, were detained and reprimanded for trespassing at the Sierra Army Depot in Herlong. Protester Kurt Kleven said the group targeted the depot with protests “because of the nuclear weapons stored there.”

Five years ago

They don’t carry backpacks to classes, wear sweatshirts emblazoned with the college’s logo or cheer their fellow students from the bleachers, but inmates at several California state prisons and the Lassen County Jail are real-life Lassen Community College (LCC) students just the same.

Cary Templeton, LCC’s dean of student services, said the college’s Prison Outreach Program provides educational opportunities to incarcerated individuals who want to turn their lives around and get an education as part of that process.

Studies show inmates who take advantage of educational programs have a lower recidivism rate than those who don’t.

Men, women and children of all ages came out to honor Veterans at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11.

American flags carried by proud veterans marching down Main Street in Susanville led the celebratory parade to Veterans Memorial Hall.

Commander Northeastern District Veterans of Foreign Wars, Sheldon Merchant, hailed as master of ceremonies during the Veterans Day Memorial service.
