Nov. 3, 2012 — Lassen County Federal Credit Union (LCFCU) is partnering with Lassen Senior Services and has launched a food drive to help provide a Thanksgiving meal for the elderly in the community.

A collection box has been set up inside the business at 2605 Riverside Dr. where people can donate non-perishable holiday-food items such as cranberry sauce, green beans and stuffing. You can stop by LCFCU and pick up a grocery list for a complete list of needed food.

LCFCU is also accepting cash donations and will match the amount the community gives. The goal is to raise $500 by Dec. 7, when it is expected the money will be donated to Lassen Senior Services.

Anyone can participate in the food drive or give a monetary donation. You don’t have to be a LCFCU member, according to Dawn Miller, chief executive officer.

She said it’s for the community to participate; the more the better.

According to Miller, LCFCU has taken on Lassen Senior Services as a year-long project because it doesn’t have enough money due to budget cuts.

According to Penny Artz, Lassen Senior Services executive director, the program provides meals four days a week at its location at 1700 Sunkist Drive in Susanville. The Meals on Wheels service provides food to homebound seniors.

Lassen Senior Services also provides some homemaker services, once a week transportation for medical appointments in Reno and in Susanville, as needed. The program provides activities and educational classes, including a computer course on Friday.

Clients can come in from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday to access the computer lab. Tai-Chi classes are provided two days a week.

According to Artz, Lassen Senior Services serves 25 clients in Westwood; 28 in the Doyle and Herlong areas and 88 to 100 people in the Susanville area on a daily basis. It is a non profit organization.

It does receive about $14,214 a month from the Planning and Service Area (PSA) 2 Area on Aging. The amount was cut down from last year’s $26,000 a month allotment.

Artz said about $6,000 to $8,000 of that money is spent on food.

Lassen Senior Services also receives money from the county for transportation.

If anyone would like to make a monetary donation, they can do so through Paypal.

Lassen Senior Services has also joined onecause.com an online shopping mall. If people shop from onecause.com, they can choose Lassen Senior Services as a charity of choice and a percentage of money is given to onecause.com who then sends it to Lassen Senior Services.

Another way the organization is trying to raise money is by recycling small electronic waste (e-waste).

Artz said people can drop off small electronic waste at the senior citizens center or at LCFCU.

Accepted items are cell phones, digital cameras, MP3 players, digital cameras and ink cartridges.

Now that the cold weather is back, senior citizens are in need of firewood.

Artz said the local Rotary groups have donated firewood, which Lassen Senior Services gives to the senior citizens until it runs out.
