Oct. 18, 2012 — Residents at Eagle Lake Village were treated to a swing music concert thanks to the Susanville Symphony Society’s 10 Random Acts of Culture.
The symphony’s swing band held its dress rehearsal at the retirement home Monday, Oct. 15. Residents listened to songs such as “Day in the Life of a Fool” and “Bésame Mucho,” as well as singing solos. Some of the listeners were seen tapping or dancing in their seats.
According to Dana Hirsche, symphony society executive director, 10 Random Acts of Culture was developed to give back to the community and infuse it with music. It is being held in conjunction with the symphony’s 10th anniversary this year.
Hirsche said the board members discussed ideas they would like to see the symphony do and performing at Eagle Lake Village was Matt Mullin’s idea.
Ten Random Acts of Culture kicked off in September when the youth orchestra played concerts at three schools. According to Hirsche, students learned about the families of instruments and the sounds they make.
At least one event will be held each month and future plans include free recitals and a music lecture from Ben Wade, symphony conductor and artistic director.
The swing concert is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19 and Saturday, Oct. 20 at the Veterans Memorial Hall in Susanville. Directed by Matt Mullin, the event features 40 musicians and singers who will perform a new selection of America’s music using original charts from the Big Band Era.
According to Hirsche, executive director for the symphony society, Friday’s concert is sold out but both general and reserve tickets are available for Saturday’s performance.
Tickets are available at Leslie’s Jewelry, 700 Main St., in Susanville.
