Mary Evelyn Sattler

Hazel Gladys Lain went to be with her Lord Jesus on Monday, Jan. 30, 2012, at the age of 92.

She was born in Comanche, Texas, on April 29, 1919 to Marion and Ethel Brown. The family moved to Imperial, Calif. where she met Aron G. Lain, known as (A) Lain. They were married on May 22, 1937, and moved to the Santa Rosa area within a few years. They were the proud parents of two daughters and one son. After raising their family and (A) having to retire early due to health issues, and losing a leg, they moved to Likely, Calif., where they enjoyed many happy years fishing and fellowshipping with family members and friends in the area. (A) and Hazel moved to Janesville in 1982 to be near their son John and his wife Cecelia Lain, their youngest daughter and her husband Sherry and Gery Jones, all of Janesville.

(A) passed away in July of 1987, shortly after their 50^th anniversary.

Hazel was a member of the Honey Lake Assembly of God Church in Janesville, where she was loved by anyone who knew her. She also enjoyed many years attending Jolly Elders as well as the Susanville Seniors and loved going on outings with them. She was well known for her great pies and fried chicken. Her family was her greatest joy and her great heartache when her daughter, Lois Lain, of Likely, Calif. passed away in December 1999.

At 89, Hazel moved to Country Villa Riverview convalescent home. She loved all the staff and patients there and specially enjoyed all the activities. Hazel was blessed with five grandsons and two granddaughters, seven great-grandsons and seven great-granddaughters, and five great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012 at Diamond Crest Cemetery, followed by a reception at Honey Lake Assembly of God Church in Janesville, Calif.

Mary passed away in Susanville, Calif., surrounded by the love and prayers of 14 family members.

She is survived by her brother, Dale Lichtenbarger, of Lapaz, Ind.; daughter Rita Retterath, of Doyle, Calif.; and son, Ralph Sattler, of Martinez, Calif. She has five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Born in South Bend, Ind., she is the daughter of Roland and Neva Lichtenbarger.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Flossie Dick, and her husband of 65 years, Nicholas Sattler.

She met Nick at a barn dance. She was climbing the ladder to the hayloft and slipped and fell into Nick’s arms. Mary’s parents did not want them to wed. They eloped and were married on Sept. 12, 1934 in Minot, N.D. their parents learned of the marriage while listening to the radio. Nick and Mary lived in Grand Forks, N.D., Tacoma, Wash., Tooele, Utah and Doyle, Calif.

Mary finished high school at age 14. She won the North Dakota Spelling Bee. She flew with a stunt pilot in his two-seater airplane at age 10. He handed her a bag. She asked what is it for? He said for when you get sick. She said, I won’t! She didn’t. Doing loops and flying upside down didn’t faze her.

Mary’s working life centered around food — be it in the preparation or the serving. She loved pleasing people. She could pull a delicious meal together for a crowd in a matter of minutes.

Mary developed the “wet” version of Macular Degeneration and lost her sight.

Mary was a strong-spirited and wonderful woman who will be dearly missed by friends and family.

Service was held at the Sierra Army Chapel, Herlong, Calif. at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012 followed by interment at the Doyle Cemetery, followed by remembrance of her life at the Doyle Senior Center.
