Vera Marie Vonck (nee Santus)

Born Sept. 21, 1919 in North Vandergrift, Pa., Vera died peacefully, early Nov. 22, 2011 in Susanville, Calif. Vera was the second child (of eight children) born to John and Josephine Santus. The Santus family moved to Rossford, Ohio where Vera grew up, met and married a handsome painter (from the city of Toledo), named Albert C. Vonck.

Following their marriage on June 27, 1939, in Toledo, Ohio, Al enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving from May 1942 to October 1945. Al’s plane was shot down in the Pacific during World War II, but he returned safely to his beloved Vera. Although Al and Vera had no children, they had a wonderful, happy marriage until Al’s death in August 1992.

Al and Vera lived in Lassen County more than 40 years, eventually making their home in Ravendale. Following Al’s death, Vera continued working in her beautiful flower garden and at the Ravendale School. By the year 2001, Vera was ready to relocate to an apartment in Susanville. With the exception of a short move to Ohio in 2006, Vera remained in Susanville.

Vera loved people (especially children). She loved laughing, hugs, coffee, dogs and nearly everything about life. She also loved God and prayers. When times were occasionally tough for her, she always welcomed prayer and immediately followed any prayer by praying the Lord’s Prayer out loud.

Vera is survived by her sister, Hattie Peterson; brother, Bill Santus, and families; her dear sister-in-law, Peggy Santus; nephew Kevin Santus (her human guardian angel); and dozens of additional nieces and nephews in the Ohio and Michigan areas.

Her family and friends would like to thank her doctor and friend, Dr. Jay Beams, the caring staff at Eagle Lake Village, the Jimmy Stokes family, and the many friends at Lassen County Federal Credit Union, Susanville Supermarket, Crossroads Ministries (especially Diane and Sherrie) and many more who loved and responded to Vera’s jokes, friendly insults and big, big hugs. Vera also will never be forgotten by Ed and Susan Kranz and Harriet Flory, her Ravendale family.

A memorial service will be held at Walton’s Colonial Chapel (115 S. Lassen St., Susanville) at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10.
