Barbara Rand Nagel
Barbara Rand Nagel passed away on Nov. 7, 2009 at Country Villa Riverview Health Care Center in Susanville. Barbara was born March 12, 1920 in Chicago, Ill.
In the early 1930’s Barbara and her family moved to Southern California. She attended Westlake School for Girls in the Los Angeles area and UCLA. While in high school and college she became involved in polo. While attending UCLA she was the first woman player on the men’s polo team and became the captain of the team. Through polo and other activities she became friends with many of the entertainers of the time, such as Spencer Tracy, Robert Stack and Walt Disney. She was also an avid photographer (even developing her own pictures) and compiled a collection of photos of the people that she rode with in that era.
She toured Europe in 1936.
On May 15, 1943, she married Big Band Leader, Freddy Nagel at Stanford University Chapel. After traveling and living in many parts of the country, Fred retired from the music business and they lived in Stinson Beach, Calif., for a period of time. Fred and Barbara bought a ranch and moved to Lassen County with their three children in 1951.
They purchased their first five registered Hereford cattle in 1953. Barbara’s first love had always been horses, but cattle became a very important part of her life. When her children entered the 4-H Program, she became a 4-H leader. She was always learning more about raising, feeding and showing cattle. This finally evolved into taking her cattle to shows and sales across the country, winning many awards. Her favorite pastime was riding around in her old 4-wheel drive pickup while feeding and spoiling her purebred Polled Hereford bulls. She was a mentor to many young people in the Hereford Show scene, and was very proud of their accomplishments.
In between all the cattle and ranch work on the “Happy Valley Ranch,” she became a devoted worker for the California Republican Central Committee, starting with the campaign of Dwight Eisenhower for President. She spent countless hours over the years organizing events, preparing mailings, and calling people to get out and vote. She and several other people were instrumental in convincing Ronald Reagan to run for office. Following her husband’s death in 1999, she continued working on the ranch with her cattle, and dabbling in politics. In July 1999, Barbara was named Woman of the Year for the California Third Assembly District by the State Legislature.
In contrast to her Beverly Hills up-bringing, her favorite attire was flannel shirts and blue jeans, although when she attended events which she thought were a little too “uppity” she wore a mink coat over her blue jeans.
Barbara was preceded in death by her father William J. Rand, Jr., mother Clara Wake Rand, of Beverly Hills, and husband Fredric H. Nagel.
She is survived by her sons James Nagel and wife Gladys, of Susanville; Fredric Nagel and wife Theresa, of Susanville; daughter Shirley Nagel Lee and husband Patrick, of Mt. Vernon, Ore.; four grandchildren, Steven Nagel and Michael Nagel, of Sacramento, Calif.; Tessa Nagel Langston and Randen Nagel, of Janesville, Calif.; four great-grandsons, Jonathan, Wesley, and Dylan Langston, and Justus Nagel, all of Janesville; longtime close friend Cindy Weimer, of Standish, and many other friends too numerous to list.
At her request, there will be no services. A gathering of family and friends will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances in her memory may be made to the Lassen County 4-H Memorial Scholarship Fund, Darcy Hansen, Coordinator, 707 Nevada St., Susanville, CA 96130.
