Lassen deputy assists in Modoc bust
According to Modoc County Narcotics Task Force Commander Stacy Callaghan, officers arrested Mac McAbee, 64, of Burney, Jesse McAbee, 35, and Christopher Burns, 22, both of Day, which is a small town located just west of McArthur.
Callaghan said federal investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are interested in the case, because possession of a fully-automatic Sten rifle is a federal felony.
Officers also recovered a sawed-off shotgun, which has to be measured to determine if it’s legal to possess in California, and a revolver with the serial number ground off, which is a felony, along with a Noinco SKS assault rifle and a 20 mm barrel, similar to an anti-aircraft gun barrel, and several hundred rounds of 20 mm ammunition.
Officers also confiscated 15 mature marijuana plants, worth an estimated $10,000 and some equipment commonly used in the manufacture of methamphetamine. Callaghan said it was not a complete lab and no meth was discovered at the site.
All three men are scheduled to appear in court again at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16. All three entered not guilty pleas on Thursday, Sept. 20, and were released from custody after promising to appear in court on Oct. 16.
The Modoc NTF executed a search warrant granted after a Modoc deputy noticed suspicious activity in the area of the ranch northwest of Day. Along with the Lassen County deputy, other officers who provided assistance included two from the U.S. Forest Service, along with others from the Shasta County Sheriff's Office and the California Highway Patrol.
