Grizzlies drop season opener to Vikings
Lassen High School’s varsity football team fell 24-7 to the Pleasant Valley Vikings on Friday, Aug. 31 in the season opener at Arnold Field.
Heading into the fourth quarter, Lassen held a 7-3 lead, but the Vikings got 21 unanswered points in the last quarter to take the victory.
Pleasant Valley got on the board in the first quarter after recovering a fumble at the Lassen 10-yard line. They were unable to advance the ball and had to settle for a field goal.
Later in the quarter Grizzlies quarterback Quinton Perry completed a center-screen pass to Ben Johnson, on fourth-and-seven. Johnson broke a tackle and picked up the first down. On the very next play, Perry faked a handoff and took the ball in untouched from 18-yards to put Lassen up 7-3.
The Grizzlies were unable to get any offense going in the second half, due to a handful of dropped passes from the Lassen receivers. Jeremy Bowles had an interception for Lassen and also broke up a key third-and-short for the Vikings in the third quarter.
Lassen’s next game will be at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7 against Enterprise at Arnold Field.
Lassen High School’s junior varsity football team pulled out a thrilling 20-18 victory over the Pleasant Valley Vikings.
The Vikings got on the board with a 32-yard run with 6:18 left in the first quarter, but Lassen would not fall behind for very long. With 4:03 left in the first, Daren Lee had a 58-yard touchdown along the right side of the field to tie the game at 6.
In the second quarter, Lassen recovered a fumble at the Vikings 37-yard line, giving them a great starting field position. A few plays later, quarterback Brandon Whitestone had a 5-yard keeper play to give Lassen a 12-6 lead. Whitestone also completed the two-point play to give the Grizzlies an eight-point lead.
With 55 seconds left in the half, and the score 14-12 in favor of Lassen, Daren Lee broke open a 24-yard counter play for a touchdown and a 20-12 lead. The score would remain the same the rest of the second half, giving Lassen their first victory of the season.
Lassen High School’s frosh football team opened up the season with a 28-7 victory over the Pleasant Valley Vikings.
Trevor Baum got Lassen on the board with a run to the left side for a touchdown in the first quarter. Austin Chedwick completed the two-point play to put Lassen up 8-0. With 2:34 left in the quarter, Chedwick again found the end zone with a counter run. Lassen took the lead 15-0. The Grizzlies offensive line was opening up holes for the running backs and the defensive line did not allow a first down until 4:46 to go in the second quarter.
In the second quarter Richard Murphy had a short quarterback keeper to give Lassen a 22-0 lead. Chedwick got his third score of the game with a three-yard run up the middle to give Lassen a 28-0 lead in the third.
Pleasant Valley finally got on the board with 3:20 to go in the fourth with a corner touchdown reception.
