Vietnam traveling memorial attracted 30,000
The AMVTT computed attendance using the number of inquiries it received, along with how many materials it gave away during the event, Sturgeon said.
“We had 2,000 people during the Sunday worship services,” said Sturgeon, who is the senior pastor of the Susanville Church of the Nazarene, adding there were 1,000 chairs and at least that many people standing during the 10 a.m. service.
A commendation letter from the Lassen County Board of Supervisors to the committee called the event not only successful but also wonderful. It singled out Mike Cornelison, a Navy veteran and the Family Life Pastor of Susanville Church of the Nazarene, who spearheaded the drive to bring the wall to Susanville.
“You are to be congratulated for the seamless manner and spirit in which it was carried out,” said the letter of commendation approved at the board’s Tuesday, July 17 meeting. “The patriotism, reverence and good feelings imparted by the program, including the speakers, the displays and the setting will be long remembered by young and old, veteran and non-veteran alike.”
It said the event captured and prolonged “the best of the mood, purpose and ideals of the Fourth of July celebration.” The letter thanked the committee for choosing Lassen County as the site at which to stage the event.
“The large number of public attendees who traveled to this remote location from considerable distances is a testimony to the committee’s hard work in promoting, organizing and carrying off this meaningful event.”
The board also expressed it’s appreciation to the committee for a job well done.
