Vegetation fire started by fireworks
“We were fortunate this fire was early in the morning when we had enough resources to put the fire out,” said CAL FIRE Captain Paul Trenholm. “If this fire had started around 3 p.m., we could have had a catastrophic wildfire that would have jeopardized many homes.”
The fireworks were purchased from one of the many vendors in Susanville during the holidays. Safe and Sane Fireworks are approved through the California State Fire Marshals Office but according to Lassen County Code 9.70.020, it’s unlawful to possess fireworks of any type in the county area.
Susanville Interagency Fire Center officials want to remind everyone to be extra careful with fire use. CAL FIRE has suspended outdoor burn permits and federal agencies have implemented fire restrictions on public lands.
“With the current and predicted hot dry weather and active thunder cells passing through northern California, it’s always best to be safe,” said SIFC co-center manager Craig Kincaid. “Don’t drive off roads, smoke in enclosed vehicles only, campfires are not allowed except within developed campgrounds and if cutting firewood, turn saws off at 1 p.m.”
