Council names Hill as assistant to the mayor
“I am honored to be entrusted with this position and the opportunity to help our city council through this transition period,” said Hill. “This community can be at ease knowing they have an excellent, dedicated council and city staff.
“Contrary to rumor, the city has made enormous progress the last few years. The city is in a good position to move forward with new projects and expanded services. Most of all, we need the support of the citizens and to hear your ideas and concerns,” said Hill, who began working for the city in March 1994.
According to City Clerk Debra Magginetti, in the past Hill’s six-month position was entitled interim city administrator.
One of Hill’s duties will be to recruit for the city administrator job and Magginetti said Hill is eligible to apply.
Hill takes the city’s reins at the same time the council is looking to find a permanent city attorney. Kathleen Lazard, who was with the city 25 years, left the area in April.
The council will also be reviewing applications to fill the seat vacated by Mayor Pro tem Rocky Joy. The appointed councilmember will hold the seat until a general election on Nov. 6.
At the May 16 council meeting, Rainey read the following statement:
“This is my last city council meeting in Susanville. I want the citizens of this city, the city council and city staff to know that I am leaving for personal reasons and in a positive manner. Susanville and the City Council have been very good to me and I appreciate that.
“The city is in the best condition it has been in many years. When I was appointed the interim city administrator in 2004, it was no secret the city was in a pretty dire financial situation. But, with the patience of the community, the commitment of the council and the hard work and dedication of city staff, we have been able to correct the practices that led to those problems.
“I wish to say thank you to each and every member of the city staff. The city staff is good, honest and hard working folks, they deserve to be treated with courtesy and respect.
“I would also like to thank the city council, including past city council members Vern Templeton and Mary Fahlen and former city attorney Kathleen Lazard for the guidance and support given me during my tenure as your city administrator.
“Good luck and God bless you all.”
