Local musician receives high honor
The award honors those who have a continued influence in developing teachers.
Craig, who is technically retired, teaches part time at Richmond Elementary School and gives private lessons. He said he not only enjoys playing but he likes to help students excel.
Craig was instrumental in starting a music program at Lassen High School where he taught for many years.
He also taught computers, welding and aviation at Lassen Community College. Craig holds his commercial pilot’s license and said flying was one hobby outside of music he enjoys along with mining, rock hounding, photography and business pursuits.
Currently, Craig plays with the Susanville Symphony Society and The Reno Pops.
Born and raised near Chico, Calif., Craig said he became “involved in the music fabric of the community from the age of 9. The wide range of musical opportunities available via the school and college nurtured a growth rate unavailable in most communities. That coupled with some excellent music teachers have taught me the background to continue successful growth and study in my field over the years.
“Following college graduation from CSU-Chico, I spent one year instructing in a U.S. Army Band Training Unit and two years as assistant director and drum major of a military band in Germany.
“I have enjoyed performing in many different organization throughout the western United States,” said Craig of his long musical career.
Craig is married to wife Ann who also plays in the Reno Pops and Susanville Symphony. She is a library tech at Richmond School and besides playing music spent many years coaching softball and field hockey.
The Craigs have three children, Michelle Ngotel, Debbie Craig and Matthew Craig and four grandchildren.
Craig said music needs to be part of the overall schooling of a child and one of his goals has been to keep music in the schools.
