Substation failure knocks out power in Westwood
The substation provides power for about 1,100 LMUD customers in the Westwood area.
LMUD Assistant General Manager Ray Luhring said when the transformer bushing failed it took the entire substation down with it.
But help is on the way, thanks to LMUD’s relationship with the Western Area Power Association.
On Friday morning, Feb. 9, WAPA sent a mobile substation from the Central Valley for LMUD to use, and the Westwood area was scheduled to be back on line as early as Friday afternoon.
He said it would take WAPA several hours to disconnect the mobile substation and transport it to Westwood and several more hours for LMUD to patch the substation into its system.
Luhring said the transformer could have failed for 100 different reasons such as moisture or contact with an animal, but the cause is unknown at this time.
“It’s just one of those things,” Luhring said. “We didn’t see anything obvious, but it’s a pretty old transformer.”
The mobile substation from WAPA has more than twice the capacity needed to supply power to Westwood area residents, and Luhring said LMUD would need to purchase a new transformer to get the substation back in operation.
