Around 4:23 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 10, the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office received information that a person had been struck by a Union Pacific train traveling southbound about six-tenths of a mile north of Highway 70 near Chilcoot.
A deputy sheriff responded to the scene and confirmed the person struck by the train had died.
The operators of the train told the deputy the dead man was lying near the rails and may have been injured. They added the man was moving prior to the accident.
The operators put the train into an emergency stop but were not able to stop the train before it struck the man.
The man was not carrying any identification and was wearing several layers of clothing, which often is consistent with transient behavior, said Undersheriff Silas Bollinger in a press release, issued on Jan. 11.
He had a prescription pill bottle in his property from a pharmacy in Salt Lake City, Utah. Salt Lake police determined the prescription was issued to a person in a homeless shelter.
After investigating, Salt Lake police came up with a name, ran a records check and faxed the Lassen County sheriff’s department some photos of tattoos from its records of tattoos through which Lassen County officials made a positive identification.
