Gilbert Allen Schenk, 77, died Monday, Nov. 27, 2006, at his home in Susanville, Calif.
He was born on Aug. 31, 1929 in Campbell, Neb. He graduated from Red Cloud High School, Neb. He served in and retired from the Air Force after 23 years of service. He and his wife Shirley were married for 49 years and eight months and had seven children.
He lived and worked in Oceanside and Carlsbad, Calif., for 25 years. In 2000, they moved to Susanville, where they had a house built with a view of the mountains. His favorite pastimes were gardening, watching his favorite baseball team, the Dodgers, and favorite football teams, Nebraska Cornhuskers and the St. Louis Rams.
He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley Schenk in 2004; son, Darell Schenk, in 2003; father, Ralph Schenk and sister Dorothy Jauken.
He is survived by his children, David and his wife Joyce, of Altus, Okla., Carlene Jones and her husband Keith, of Riverside, Calif., Deylan Schenk and his wife Elsie, and Deby Marshall and her husband Gerry, of Susanville, Janine Benton and her husband Tony, and Lori Spencer and her husband Owen, of Crescent City, Calif. He had 20 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his mother Margaret Schenk, 96, of Hastings, Neb.; three brothers, Marlin Schenk, Ken Schenk and Lloyd Schenk; and four sisters, Marge Kudrna, Eleanore Burgess, Gloria Steiner and Darlene Davis.
A memorial service was held at Walton’s Colonial Mortuary in Susanville on Wednesday, Dec. 6.
KATHERINE MANFREDINI
Long time Susanville resident Katherine Manfredini, 95, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2006, at RoseLeaf Senior Care Facility in Chico, Calif. She was born Katherine Pasero on April 15, 1911, in McCloud, Calif. In 1928 she married Bruno Manfredini. The couple operated the Alpine Boarding House in the 1930s when Lassen Lumber and Box was in operation. Katherine graduated from Delores Beauty College in 1939, after which she owned and operated the Mt. Lassen Beauty Salon for 35 years. Even after she sold the business, she continued to "fix" hair for the ladies at the nursing home until her husband's illness forced her to retire.
Katherine was small in stature, but had a big heart. Those who knew her loved her. She will be greatly missed by one and all.
Katherine is survived by a sister, Inez Pasero of Redding, Calif., grandchildren Michael Malone and his wife Susan of Yreka, Calif., and Candy Wasson of Chico; two great grandchildren, Jesse Wasson and Casey Wasson both of Chico; and five great-great grandchildren, Brandie, Amber, Thomas, Cheyanne, and Dakota Wasson. She is also survived by a son-in-law, Jack Sloan and step-grandson John Sloan of Susanville, Calif., as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband of 71 years, Bruno, daughter Norma Sloan, brothers Ernie, Pete, and Bob Pasero, and sister Val Rucker.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, Dec. 9 at Walton's Colonial Mortuary, 115 South Lassen St., in Susanville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Chester businessman John Burton Guess tragically passed from this life on Friday afternoon, Dec. 1, 2006 from injuries incurred in an automobile accident outside Janesville, Calif.
Johnny, as he was affectionately known, was born 61 years ago in Susanville, Calif., to Denver and Carrie Lee (Dunham) Guess on March 25, 1945. He spent his early years residing in Westwood before the family moved to Chester in 1954.
Johnny left school early to begin working in the family plumbing business before starting John’s Backhoe Service in 1977. He became an expert in his field and was called upon by his peers on numerous occasions to help them out of a jam. Johnny’s heart was as big as some of the boulders he excavated; he was always there to help those in need with numerous non-profit organizations and churches indebted to him for his free snow removal along with other work. Johnny was just as proud sharing his expertise with his competitors as he was teaching his son the trade.
He was a longtime member of the Chester Lake Almanor Elks Lodge 2626, E. Clampus Vitus (Clampers) Vigilante Chapter 8, and a former member of the Operating Engineers Union Local 3. Johnny’s passion in life was that of his work, but he always looked forward to spending time with friends in the local taverns after a hard day in the field and enjoyed February campouts in Paynes Creek Valley with his peers.
Johnny leaves in passing his son, John Eric Guess of Chester, Calif., daughters, Brenda Lee Guess and Audrey Lynn West, both of Portola, Calif.; father and stepmother; Denver and Leonora “Nonie” Guess, of Susanville; brothers Grady Guess of Biggs, Calif., and James Guess of Lake Almanor, Calif.; sisters Lenora Vermilya, of Tillamook, Wash., and Margarette “Maggie” Westbrook of Paradise, Calif.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
A time of visitation took place Friday evening on Dec. 8, 2006 at the Fehrman Mortuary Chapel in Chester. A celebration of Johnny’s life was held on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2006 at the Chester Church of Christ with interment following in the Chester District Cemetery. DILLON AXLEY
Dillon Axley was born in Atoka, Okla. on Sept. 1, 1920. He moved to Susanville, Calif., in 1940. Dillon worked in the mills until he and George Taylor started the Taylor and Axley Contractors firm. Many of the homes and office buildings around the Susanville and Eagle Lake area were built by them.
Dillon met his wife, Alline Thomas, in Susanville. They were married for 65 years until Dillon’s death on Nov. 20, 2006. Dillon loved to fish and hunt and that’s what he spent most of his weekends doing as long as he could.
Dillon is survived by his loving wife Alline; sons Don, of Sacramento, Calif., and Ron, of Aptos, Calif.; daughter Arlene Friend, of Susanville; sister Billie Tooke, of Paradise, Calif.; two grandsons, Jason Friend, of Sacramento, and Eric Friend, of Redding,; four great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was laid to rest at Diamond Crest Cemetery on Nov. 23. He will be missed by all those who knew him.

Errol Paul Langslet, 64, died on Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006. He was born on March 9, 1942 to Paul and Noma Langslet, of Susanville, Calif.
He is survived by his mother Noma Langslet; daughter Wendy Langslet; brothers John Langslet, Randy Langslet and Rocky Langslet; numerous nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews. The family asks that donations be made to a charity of choice.
Services were held at Diamond Crest Cemetery on Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2006.

Betty May Andreozzi, 74, died on Thursday, Dec. 7, 2006. She was born on May 1, 1932.
