Low water levels bring delays, boat congestion

Friday, May 23, 2014 — Low water levels may disrupt some activities during and after Eagle Lake’s May 24 Memorial Day opener.

After another dry winter, the water level in the lake is extremely low, according to a press release from the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office. The only boat launch available at the lake will be the low-water ramp at the south marina. Due to the water level, the ramp at Spalding will not be available.

The press release added that, as a natural lake, Eagle Lake has a number of hazards not mapped or identified by buoys or markers. The release warned some of the areas are hundreds of feet from any shoreline that appear to be out in the middle of the lake. Also, some of the areas the water is extremely shallow and hazards are just below the surface.

According to the release, the sheriff’s office will patrol the south marina, however, due to the water level, it will be difficult to put boats in the north end of the lake.

The sheriff’s office planned to make a buoy line where the lake narrows at Pelican Point. All areas north of the buoy line would have a 5 mph speed limit to ensure boater safety.

Boaters were also informed there may be delays and congestion since only one boat launch will be operating.

The sheriff’s office urges citizens to be safe and cautious while boating on Eagle Lake with the reminder that the water level will continue to drop throughout the summer months.

Also, it sounds like a great place to loose your lower unit! I hate that when my lower unit falls off on a snag!

Hey, if the water is too alkaline why not add some acidity to balance the pH ? That way we can have the lake restocked with Blue fin tuna and a couple of Great White Sharks!! That should draw the tourist crowd... Great newspaper headlines too!!!

Personally, I would rather fish Pyramid Lake, than this murky, sludge pool.

1. Far from being a mud puddle, Eagle Lake is thankfully far too alkaline for Northern Pike. 2. Trout in the 2 to 4 pound class are neither "lousy" nor "undersized." And this fishery is definitely "worth the trouble" as its continuity provides some income to Lassen County.
