Herlong opens football season Sept. 21

Herlong High School's football team opens its season at home at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21 against Big Valley. The small school, located just outside Sierra Army Depot, had played football for nearly 50 years, but didn't put a team on the field last year. It was the first time in the history of the school that it didn't play football.
Athletic director Patty Crupa said the school is trying to rebuild the program and will play 9-man football this year.
Problems with declining enrollment (only about 80 students attend Herlong High School), interest and eligibility have hampered the team, and they have only 12 players.
The school also will play volleyball this year and put varsity and junior varsity squads on the hardwoods. Crupa said the volleyball squad, like the football team, is young and inexperienced.
