April 2, 2013 — For his job Spencer Leebolt wears a suit and tie and watches people play cards at a casino up near the Oregon border, but these days, and for the next several months, he’ll be in tennis shoes and hiking garb and likely in need of a shave.

Senior center hosts No-bake Bake Sale

March 28, 2013 — Lassen Senior Services has come up with a new idea to raise funds to supplement its daily hot lunch and Meals on Wheels programs — a No-bake Bake Sale. While the center requests a donation for lunches served, no eligible participant is denied a meal because of a failure or inability to contribute financially.

If you’ve never heard of a No-bake Bake Sale, you may need an explanation. Basically, instead of organizing a bake sale, which takes time, money and numerous volunteers, Lassen Senior Services is asking the community to donate the amount of money they’d normally pay for a pie, cake or plate of cookies at a bake sale fundraiser.

“In the last fiscal year, we served 25,705 meals to seniors,” said Lassen Senior Services Executive Director Penny Artz. “That’s including Meals on Wheels and all three locations (Doyle, Westwood and Susanville).”

County squanders $324,000 grant

March 26, 2013 — A question by a Lassen County Supervisor regarding an update on grants administered by the county’s Department of Planning and Building Services started the wheels of controversy turning.

According to the staff report included with the board packet, the county had not administered a $324,000 housing rehabilitation grant to be used in the South County. None of the money has been spent, and the grant expires June 30, 2013. Anderson said the county received the grant funding in August 2011.
