Festival includes all the popular activities

Thursday, July 9, 2015 — After 27 years of sponsorship, the Westwood Chamber of Commerce board of directors has learned what entertainment patrons of the Paul Bunyan Mountain and Blues Festival want when they walk through the gates of Westwood Park each July. Therefore all the favorite elements comprise the 2015 event scheduled for Saturday, July 11.

Activities within
the festival:
•A venue for the blues bands located at the southwest end of Westwood Park that has a stage, shaded picnic tables and a lawn area for portable chairs or picnic blankets. The Amy Celeste Band is scheduled to play from noon to 2 p.m., and J.C. Smith Band from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m.
•A logging show in which competitors highlight skills used within the industry begins at noon. This year the show is dedicated to the memory of an industry giant, Ole Salem. There will be a special axe-throwing competition and single man handsaw event in Salem’s honor because they were his two favorite events.

Cal Fire suspends outdoor residential burning

Thursday, July 9, 2015 — As drought conditions continue to increase fire danger in the region, Cal Fire has suspended all burn permits for outdoor open residential burning within the State Responsibility Area of Lassen, Modoc and Plumas counties.
This suspension took effect at 8 a.m. Monday, June 29, and bans all residential outdoor burning of landscape debris including branches and leaves.
“Last year the Intermountain Area experienced the Eiler Fire, the Bald Fire and the Day Fire: three fires that burned over 85,000 acres,” said Dave Junette, unit chief for the Lassen-Modoc-Plumas Unit of Cal Fire . “All three of these fires required evacuation, and many homeowners experienced firsthand how difficult it can be when you are not prepared.”
