Students learn about Earth Day

Saturday, May 9, 2015 — In honor of Earth Day, students learned about the benefits of recycling, reducing or reusing household waste.

Staff from C & S Waste Solutions and Lassen Regional Solid Waste Management Authority conducted assemblies at McKinley School and in Westwood during the week of Earth Day, which was April 22.

Students were shown what can be recycled and thought of ways about how they can repurpose household trash.

Student wins national scholarship

Friday, May 8, 2015 —It was while he was sitting in Spanish class when Jacob Escobar, a Lassen High School senior, received big news that will shape his college education.

Escobar is one of 1,000 winners nationwide selected to receive the Gates Millenium Scholars program.

According to Escobar, 52,000 students applied for the scholarship funded by Bill and Melinda Gates.

Remembering the moment like it was yesterday, Escobar said it was April 20 when he received the email notifying him he was one of the winners.

Utility hears Shaffer Mountain updates

Friday, May 8, 2015 —The Lassen Municipal Utility District Board of Trustees received an update on the Shaffer Mountain maintenance updates.

During the Tuesday, April 28 meeting, LMUD staff discussed the program of the maintenance issues on Shaffer Mountain.

“We have been doing something, it’s just not something we’re going to solve overnight,” said electric operations manager David Folce.

Lassen Peak eruption anniversary spurs regional events

Friday, May 8, 2015 —Plans to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Lassen Peak eruption are underway.

At the Wednesday, April 29 Lassen Gateway Coalition meeting, Lassen Volcanic National Park chief of interpretation Karen Haner shared about the exciting events taking place during the next couple of years.

Nearing on May 22 is the 100th anniversary to the last big eruption of Lassen Peak, which put Lassen Volcanic National Park on the map, according to Haner.

Vets confirms local dog poisoned

Thursday, May 7, 2015 — Raider, a purebred boxer who lived with his family in Leavitt Lake, is dead — the victim of poisoning.

Raider’s owner Crystal Couso said Raider was one of two pet boxers the family owns, and the other dog was unharmed. She also suspects other animals in the area have been poisoned as well.

Couso said Raider never left the family yard or roamed through the neighborhood, so she believes someone threw the D-Con (rodent poison) that took his life over the fence and Raider ate it. In fact, he was chained up in the backyard for several days before he became ill.
