Sheriff’s office launches public safety announcement system

April 16, 2013 — The Lassen County Sheriff’s Office is launching a new public safety mass notification system. To provide this service, Lassen County Sheriff Dean Growdon is contracting with CodeRED®, one of the leading industry-leading high-speed mass notification systems.

This will allow the sheriff’s office to effectively communicate time-sensitive messages through a variety of traditional and modern communications mediums. CodeRED will allow public safety alerts to be delivered seconds after the sheriff’s office launches a message. The sheriff’s office will also be able to send mass alerts on behalf of other law enforcement agencies and fire agencies and public health.

Alerts can come in the form of a voice call, text message or email addresses.

Sportsmen’s Club hosts annual fishing derby

April 15, 2013 — Memorial Park will come alive at 5 a.m. Saturday, April 20, when hundreds of children ages 2 to 15 take up fishing poles in hopes of catching a prized trout in the Susan River. Due to conflicts between young anglers and adults when the event was held on fishing season’s opening day back in the 1980s, a special dispensation from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife permits the derby the week before the regular season opens. Susanville is the only city in the state allowed to hold such an event.

Participants should register/check in between 5 and 9 a.m. Susanville Supermarket IGA and Morning Glory Dairy will provide free breakfast for children from 5:30 to 8:30 a.m., which will include donuts, fruit, hot chocolate and juice. Coffee will be available for purchase.
