Supes contribute funds to Chamber contest

Tuesday, July 21, 2015 — The Lassen County Board of Supervisors approved contributing $4,000 to the Lassen County Chamber of Commerce to further its efforts in the America’s Best Communities contest.
The Chamber initially asked for a $6,000 donation, but lowered its request to $5,000, according to County Administrative Officer Richard Egan.
During a Tuesday, July 14 meeting of the Lassen County Board of Supervisors, Egan said he received an email from Chamber Executive Director Patti Hagata several weeks ago further reducing the request to $4,000 due to such a good response from the community, service organizations, the city of Susanville and others.

Fire department to assess for weed abatement

Monday, July 20, 2015 —Forest Duerksen, fire chief for the Westwood Fire Department, announced he will routinely assess properties for fire hazards within the next two weeks. He will look for grasses and weeds more than a foot tall as well as anything that might be combustible, such as piles of raked pine needles.
The rules apply to the entire property, including the back alley.
There is a burn ban so yard waste will need to be hauled to the Westwood Transfer Station, said Duerksen.

Fencing project plans sent to state

Monday, July 20, 2015 — Design plans for the proposed fencing project at Lassen High School will be sent to the state for review after a mixed vote from the Lassen Union High School District Board of Trustees.
Superintendent Bill McCabe sought the board’s direction during a June meeting where he said a survey of the site was conducted and plans were also drawn up and were ready to be submitted to the Department of State Architect.
He said, “… If the board does not want to move forward with this,  then there’s no sense in spending the resources. I can get approved plans, but if they’re going to sit in the can, they’re kind of worthless and we’ve spent money we shouldn’t be spending.”

Fire restrictions now in effect

Sunday, July 19, 2015 — Forest officials have announced fire restrictions will go into effect on the Lassen National Forest beginning Wednesday, July 1, and continuing through the declared end of the 2015 fire season.
The restrictions address campfire use, off-road driving, smoking, woodcutting and other activities on the Forest.  Such restrictions are ordered every year when the temperatures rise and cause the forest to dry out and become much more susceptible to wildfires.
“With extreme drought conditions across the state, any fire start has the potential to grow rapidly,” said Lassen National Forest Supervisor Dave Hays. “These restrictions will help us manage this risk.”

Highlights of the restrictions in effect include:
•Open fires are prohibited outside of designated, developed campgrounds and camp sites, even with a valid California campfire permit.
