Cal Fire lifts burn ban

Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2014 — Northern California’s first significant rainfall of the season, combined with cooler temperatures, has allowed the Cal Fire Lassen Modoc Plumas Unit to lift restrictions on dooryard debris burning effective at 8 a.m. Monday, Oct. 27.

This means you may burn dooryard debris without a permit. Permits will not be required until May 1, 2015. However, you must still contact your local Air Pollution Control District to ensure it’s a permissive burn day.

Prescribed burning on Eagle Lake Ranger District

Thursday, Oct. 30, 2014 —The Eagle Lake Ranger District of the Lassen National Forest is planning on burning hand piles (1 acre) for one to two days at the south end of Eagle Lake at Christie Day Use Area from Oct. 29 and 30.

Estimated direction of smoke travel is primarily to the north, northeast. Although smoke may be visible from County Road A-1, it should not impact the road in any way. Piles will be ignited to keep any smoke impacts to a minimum. The smoke will not impact any communities or smoke sensitive areas.

Severe weather watches and warnings for Sierra

Thursday, Oct. 30, 2014 — A winter storm watch remains in effect from Friday morning, Oct. 31 through Saturday afternoon, Nov. 1 above 5,000 feet.

Moderate travel problems are likely. Motorists may experience very long delays. Chain restrictions are probable especially for trucks. Reduced visibility during heavier snow will make driving hazardous.

The bulk of snow is expected between 5 p.m. Friday to 11 a.m. Saturday but lighter snow accumulations will occur before and after this timeframe.

County events celebrate Halloween

Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2014 — Whether it is candy or scary situations you are seeking this Halloween, various events around Lassen County are sure to inspire the All Hallows’ Eve holiday.

If you’re looking to walk around an old farm with scares lurking behind every corner, the Lassen Community College basketball’s Frightmare Forest should satisfy the need. Starting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30 and Friday, Oct 31, participants can attend at 417-120 Richmond Road in Susanville. There is a fee.

College approves budget

Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2014 — The Lassen Community College Board of Trustees approved the final draft of its 2014-2015 budget at the Tuesday, Oct. 14 meeting.

The budget, which was approved after opening a public hearing and discussing the document during the prior finance committee meeting, is moderately conservative.

The budget is more on the conservative side due to the volatility of state funding for the fiscal year.
