New era begins for Mountain Lifeflight

Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2015 — In order to provide the highest level of care and to maintain the EMS operations that have served the community for many years, Mountain Lifeflight has entered into an agreement to transfer operations to PHI Air Medical, a leading provider of air medical services in the country.
    This is an important opportunity for the Susanville community, as it will allow Mountain Lifeflight to continue serving the community with the highest standard of operations.

Officer kills inmate during prison riot

Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2015 — An inmate at the California Correction Center in Susanville was shot and killed by a correctional officer during a Sunday, Aug. 16 riot in one of the prison’s Level III medium-security dining halls.
    Inmate Jonathan Velarde, 23, was pronounced dead at the prison’s medical unit. No staff members were injured during the disturbance.
    According to a press release from the California Department of Corrections website, an estimated 45 inmates started fighting in dining halls about 5:45 p.m. Aug. 16.

Vegetation fires keep agencies busy

Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2015 — Several vegetation fires within Susanville kept agencies busy Monday, Aug. 17. The cause and origins of all the fires remain under investigation.
    The first was a small roadside spot fire on the Sierra Pacific Industries walking path on  Riverside Drive, which started at approximately 1:45 p.m., according to office of emergency services chief Eric Ewing.

Local cheerleaders will perform in London

Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2015 — Two Lassen High School cheerleaders earned themselves a trip to London Varsity Cheer Tour at the end of this year.
    Heather Brooks, a senior, and Kassie Sandborg, a sophomore, will be joining 600 girls from all across the United States as All Americans.
    They leave Dec. 26 and will return Jan. 2.
    “We’re both just really excited to go and it’s going to be fun,” Brooks said.

Supervisors approve use of historic courtroom

Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2015 — To help prepare for a legal case, attorney Eugene Chittock requested the use of the historic courtroom on South Lassen Street.
    The Lassen County Board of Supervisors approved a use fee in the amount of $63 per day, a cost based on an analysis using figures from the 2014-2015 Countywide Cost Allocation Plan.
    According to County Administrative Officer Richard  Egan, Chittock is representing a client he expects to take to trial and he would like to have a mock trail and do it in a courtroom setting.
