FFA represents Westwood at state convention

Saturday, May 23, 2015 — Fourteen of Westwood High’s FFA members attended the 87th annual California FFA State Convention from April 17 to 21 in Fresno, California. The adventure began with a drive to Williams, California to tour Bar Ale, a supplier of livestock feed. Westwood FFA members are purchasing feed from this company for the animals they are raising to show at the Lassen County Fair. Later that day the students toured the Jelly Belly Factory in Fairfield, California.
    The next day they met with members from different FFA chapters where they rode rides at a amusement park called Black Beards.

Teen Court celebrates competition winners

Friday, May 22, 2015 — On May 7, more than 30 Teen Court commissioners assembled at Lassen County Superior Court to compete in the inaugural Teen Court Competition.
    This year’s mock case involved a juvenile who had pleaded guilty to misdemeanor manslaughter; two teams competed against one another to present the most effective case possible.
    The Honorable Michele Verderosa presided over the hearing, while the teams were evaluated by a distinguished panel consisting of: Lassen County District Attorney Stacey Montgomery; Lassen County Public Defender Rhea Giannotti and Special Prosecutor Dan Howe.

Native plants walk announced

Friday, May 22, 2015 — You’re invited to join an informative walk in the broad Pine Creek Valley, south of Crater Mountain.
    The walk is planned from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 30. Participants will meet at Bogard Rest Area, along Highway 44 midway between Susanville and Old Station. From there, the group will caravan into Pine Creek Valley. All ages are welcome; however, the walk will be limited to the first 25 people who sign up. Dogs are not permitted.
    Dr. Robbin Thorp, bumblebee expert and U.C. Davis Department of Entomology professor emeritus, and Forest Service botanist Don Lepley will be the guides.
