High school implements water conservation plan

Friday, July 3, 2015 — With the state mandating a 36-percent reduction in water usage, Lassen Union High School has developed a conservation plan.
    “It’s looking at how do we conserve the 36-percent goal the city has to have and then maintain our landscapes appropriately,” said Lassen Union High School District superintendent Bill McCabe.
    The watering schedule has been converted to even-numbered day watering. In September, the board will be presented with a plan to change out many of the toilets with those that are low-flow.

Utility approves budget

Friday, July 3, 2015 — The Lassen Municipal Utility District approved its 2015/2016 budget during a Tuesday, June 23 board meeting.
    Current general manager Bill Stewart prepared the proposed budget with a budget committee, which was approved unanimously by the board.
    “We came to a very good end product,” said Stewart.
    According to Stewart, there are no current plans to increase the rates to customers.

Waldo hides throughout Susanville businesses

Friday, July 3, 2015 — It’s that time of the year where locals can search for the elusive Waldo in participating businesses in celebration of the fictional character’s 28th birthday.
    “It’s Waldo-riffic,” said David Teeter, Margie’s Book Nook manager.
    From Wednesday, July 1 to July 31, locals can pick up a passport from Margie’s, then visit the participating vendors and search for a 6-inch tall cutout of Waldo hidden in the store.

City council discusses Nevada Street property

Friday, July 3, 2015 — The Susanville City Council and city staff informally discussed what to potentially do with the currently empty property at 600 Nevada St.
    During the Wednesday, June 17 council meeting, city administrator Jared Hancock started conversation with the board about the property during the city administrator’s reports.
    Hancock said some members of the community had suggestions for the property, which formerly had a structure on the lot, which was demolished, due to its run-down unsafe condition.

County arts council launches Art of Gold Fever

Thursday, July 2, 2015 — The Lassen County Arts Council’s is celebrating its third year of the Community Art Event at the Lassen County Fair. While it has retired The Art of Wild Horses, it’s introducing the newest display — the gold miner.
    Lassen County Arts Council expressed appreciation to the warden at California Correctional Center, for donating inmate time to cut out the gold miners.
    “This is the third year Lassen County Arts Council has received their support, and it is instrumental in the success of this project,” said Roxanna Haynes, board treasurer. “We don’t have the resources to cut out 26 gold miners, so we are appreciative of their efforts.”
