Lassen National Park celebrates anniversary

Tuesday, May 26, 2015 — Friday, May 22 marked the 100th anniversary of the Lassen Peak eruption and Lassen Volcanic National Park is ready to celebrate.  Join Lassen Volcanic staff and scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey for special events celebrating a series of Lassen Peak eruptions that brought Lassen to the world stage and helped pave the way for the establishment of the park Aug. 9, 1916.
    Information on the eruption celebration, including the schedule of special events, can be found on the park’s website at nps.gov/lavo/planyourvisit/centennial.htm. Manzanita Lake Campground opened for the summer May 22. Butte Lake and Warner Valley campgrounds open June 5. Juniper Lake and Summit Lake North and South campgrounds open June 26. Visitor services available include the Manzanita Lake Camper Store, Lassen Café and Gifts and the Lassen Association Bookstore at the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center.

Compost sparks blaze

Tuesday, May 26, 2015 — At approximately 5:50 p.m. Saturday, May 16, the Susanville Fire Department was dispatched to a reported garage fire at 540 Wildwood Way.
    First arriving engines reported heavy smoke coming from a attached garage and from the rear of the structure. Firefighting efforts were hampered by an accumulation of household trash in the garage and an open door from the garage into the kitchen.

Residents take advantage of low-cost pet clinic

Residents bring their furry friends  for rabies vaccinations during the Low-Cost Rabies and License Clinic held Saturday, May 16 in Memorial Park.


Tuesday, May 26, 2015 — Residents, along with their dogs, lined up at least a half an hour before the Low Cost Rabies and License Clinic began May 16 in Memorial Park.
    The annual event drew several hundred people and their pets taking advantage of the low-cost services made available to them at the Low Cost Rabies and License Clinic.

Supes approve mental health plan

Tuesday, May 26, 2015 — With the proposed Mental Health Services Act Innovation Plan, Lassen Behavioral Health clients may find themselves benefiting from assistance delivered right to their home.  
    According to Melody Brawley, director of Lassen County Health and Social Services, the county’s plan is intended to be a form of field research, to explore new ideas and solutions and report back to the state on what did and did not happen and what worked.
     “Our innovation plan calls for the use of technology to help us stay connected with and monitor the health of our most at-risk patients who are diagnosed with serious and/or chronic mental illness,” Brawley said

City scrambles to create water conservation plan

Tuesday, May 26, 2015 — Brian Wilson, Susanville’s mayor, expressed the irony of the situation in which the city faces severe state-mandated water conservation measures when it has plenty of water as the city council spent more than an hour discussing at the council’s Wednesday, May 20 meeting how to meet the state regulations and avoid a possible $10,000-per-day fine.
    The state will monitor the city’s water usage beginning June 1 as the city attempts to achieve a 36 percent reduction in potable water use.
