New Penny Pines plantation to be dedicated this Saturday

Tuesday, April 22, 2014 — In conjunction with Arbor Day, Lassen National Forest will be dedicating its newest Penny Pines plantation this weekend.   

The public is invited to the dedication of this new site, which will take place starting at noon Saturday, April 26 at the Hat Creek Rim Overlook, located off Highway 44, three miles east of the junction of highways 89/44 near Old Station.

The new plantation is in the footprint of the Sugarloaf Fire, which was started by lightning in August 2009. Trees have been planted at this new Penny Pines site thanks to contributions from generous donors, many of whom have had trees planted in memory of loved ones.

Inaugural ‘Walk-A-Mile’ event garners support

Tuesday, April 22, 2014 — Large numbers of Lassen County residents came to show their support for the inaugural Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event.

More than 300 community members laced up their shoes and rounded Riverside Park from the Lassen Family Services office on Riverside Drive in support of the event.

Disaster assistance signups begin

Tuesday, April 22, 2014 — Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced eligible farmers and ranchers can sign up for U.S. Department of Agriculture disaster assistance programs restored by passage of the 2014 Farm Bill.

"We implemented these programs in record time and kept our commitment to begin sign-up today," said Vilsack. "To ensure enrollment goes as smoothly as possible, dedicated staff in more than 2,000 Farm Service Agency offices across the country are doing everything necessary to help producers that have suffered through two and a half difficult years with no assistance because these programs were awaiting Congressional action.”

Lassen County, Stone settle suit

Tuesday, April 22, 2014 — Lassen County and its former County Administrative Officer Tom Stone have finally settled their differences.

Without admitting liability, the county agreed to a $350,000 settlement to be paid to Stone’s attorney within 15 days. In exchange, Stone will dismiss with prejudice his wrongful termination/slander lawsuit against Lassen County, et al, and forever release all claims arising out of his employment with the county. Each side will bear its own attorney’s costs and expenses.

Supervisors hold meeting in Big Valley

Monday, April 21, 2014 — The supervisors will be traveling to the North County for its regularly scheduled Tuesday, April 22 meeting.

The meeting will convene at 10 a.m. at the Veterans Hall in Bieber.

According to county executive officer Richard Egan, agenda items include a presentation from the acting Modoc Forest Service supervisor regarding the sustained yields unit, which gives those who process timber a financial incentive when the timber sale goes to bid.
